FORT LEWIS COLLEGE TLINGIT CARVING DEMONSTRATIONS

Fort Lewis College is located in Durago, CO. Fort Lewis is home to a large number of Alaska Native Students, and indigenous students throughout the southwest. The Center for Southwest Studies curators Elizabeth MacMillan and Amy Cao asked me to come out to do 2 days of Tlingit Carving Demonstrations on April 7th and 8th. It was great connecting with so many students, teachers brought their entire classes over throughout the day to come visit. My carving demonstrations turned into lectures about Tlingit Art and history with questions throughout. The discussions were great, we covered a wide range of topics from Native Identity, to colonization, to learning to trust your ability in order to go after your dreams.

I was proud to see the students pursuing their education. All the best to everyone I connected with, and thank you to Liz and Amy for the opportunity! Also, big thank you to Smartwool for sending out a box of socks to give away!
